Essential Eligibility Criteria

GEC prioritizes the safety and well-being of all participants. To ensure a successful and enriching program experience, we have established essential eligibility criteria. These criteria are crucial for both students and program leaders.

Who May Not Be Suitable:

  • Individuals under court order or mandatory supervision
  • Students requiring ongoing mental health therapy during the program
  • Participants with physical limitations that significantly hinder program activities

Age Requirements:

  • Gap Programs: 18-22 years old
  • Summer Programs: 14-17 years old (with some flexibility for mature 17-year-olds)

General Requirements:

  • Fluent English communication
  • Agreement to program terms and conditions
  • Adherence to health, safety, and security policies
  • Voluntary participation (without pressure)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal instructor reliance
  • Following instructions and practicing safe risk-management
  • Positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and active program participation
  • Attendance at all scheduled activities (unless medically excused)
  • Self-management of personal health needs (hydration, nutrition, hygiene, medications)
  • Adaptability to new environments and cultural norms
  • Respect for cultural differences (communication, time management, personal space, etc.)
  • Ability to cope with varying conditions (climate, hygiene, communication styles)
  • Independent management of belongings and navigating public transportation

Additional Considerations:

  • Limited mobile device and internet access during the program
  • Shared living quarters with students of diverse backgrounds
  • Physical and mental fitness for program activities (including carrying gear and navigating terrain)
  • Open communication with instructors regarding any social or emotional challenges
