Program Rules and Expected Behavior
At GEC, creating a safe, educational, and enjoyable adventure for everyone is our top priority. These program guidelines outline the expected behavior for all participants (students, staff, and chaperones) on every Gap Heroes trip.
COMMUNICATION AND SAFETY
- Speak Up! Report any concerns or issues immediately to your program instructor. Having their contact information readily available is crucial.
- Be Prepared: Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures before departure.
- Safety First: Always follow instructions from the program instructor. Stay with the group unless explicitly authorized to separate.
RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY
- Treat Everyone with Kindness: Respect fellow participants, staff, chaperones, locals, and the places we visit. Discrimination, harassment, or bullying are strictly prohibited.
- Be On Time: Punctuality is key! Participate in all scheduled activities and arrive on time for transportation to ensure a smooth program flow.
- Take Care of Your Belongings: You are responsible for your personal belongings and actions. Vandalism, theft, or property damage are not tolerated. Financial responsibility lies with you for any damage caused.
- Follow the Rules: Always comply with the established guidelines of visited sites, accommodations, and transportation services.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
- Drugs & Alcohol are Off-Limits: Possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal substances is strictly forbidden, regardless of local laws.
Cultural Awareness & Preparation
- Dress Appropriately: Respect local customs by dressing accordingly for the itinerary.
- Pack Smart: Bring suitable clothing and equipment for planned activities, as advised by program instructors.
TECH ETIQUETTE
- Be Mindful: Electronic devices should not disrupt activities or others. Prioritize privacy and comfort when taking photos or recording.
PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES
- Drugs & Illegal Substances: Do not possess, use, purchase, or distribute marijuana, illegal drugs, or unauthorized controlled substances (except prescribed medication).
- Criminal Activity: Refrain from violating local or U.S. laws.
- Weapons: Using, purchasing, distributing, or possessing any weapons or firearms is prohibited.
- Hitchhiking: This is not a safe practice and is not allowed.
- Unauthorized Vehicles: Operating any motorized or electric vehicle (cars, motorbikes, mopeds, scooters, electric bikes, etc.) is strictly forbidden.
CONSEQUENCES OF VIOLATION
Violating program guidelines may result in disciplinary action, including warnings, removal from activities, or even dismissal from the program at your own expense. The GEC Discipline Committee has the final say in all dismissal decisions. A typical process involves verbal/written warnings, probation, and potential dismissal as a last resort. However, engaging in prohibited activities could lead to immediate dismissal.
DISMISSAL IMPLICATIONS
Dismissed participants must return home immediately, at their own expense.
- Travel Costs: You are responsible for all return travel costs. No program fee refunds or compensation for damages will be provided.
- Arranging Return Travel: If you fail to arrange travel home within 48 hours, GEC will arrange it at your expense. You will be obligated to reimburse GEC within 30 days for any dismissal-related travel costs.
Let’s Make it a Great Trip!
By following these program guidelines and respecting everyone, we can all have a safe, enriching, and unforgettable GEC Gap Year experience!
